Hispanic Heritage Month Staff Highlights

It’s Hispanic Heritage Month! Each week, we’ll be recognizing the contributions of Hispanic members of our team to the health of the communities we serve and listening as they share how they celebrate their culture.

Today, we are highlighting sisters Sandra and Solangie! Sandra is the Practice Manager of NHFHS’ Travelers Rest office and Solangie is a Clinical Support Specialist at our Mallard site.

What does your Hispanic heritage mean to you?

Our Hispanic heritage means cleaning house on Saturday morning to salsa music, eating mom’s homemade frijoles and chicharrón, speaking Spanglish and knowing that we will always call two countries home. It means that we take pride in who we are, love our family and are grateful for what we have and where we are.

What are your favorite Hispanic cultural traditions?

All of December including the Day of the Candles on December 8 and opening our Christmas gifts at midnight on Christmas Eve. For New Year’s Eve, we have many traditions — one of the best is eating twelve grapes, one for each month of the upcoming year. As you eat a grape, you make a wish for that month!

What do you enjoy most about your role at NHFHS?

Both Sandra and Solangie agree that providing patient-centered care is what they enjoy most about working at NHFHS. “Being able to make a difference through interaction with patients is an important part of my day,” says Sandra. Solangie adds, “I like speaking to patients on the phone and knowing that I was able to help them.”

Today, we are highlighting Laura Cabanas! Laura is a Dental Assistant at New Horizon Family Dental Care.

What does your Hispanic heritage mean to you?

My Hispanic heritage means everything to me. It just reminds me of my roots and where I come from. It makes me feel proud to be part of a beautiful community and an amazing background.

What are your favorite Hispanic cultural traditions?

My favorite traditions are Las Posadas and Dia de los Muertos. Las Posadas starts at dusk on December 16 and is celebrated the nine nights leading up to Christmas Day. Dia de los Muertos is held in November and is a day of celebration to remember friends and family members who have passed away.

What do you enjoy most about your role at New Horizon Family Dental Care?

I most enjoy being able to help patients. I know that a lot of people are terrified of going to the dentist so being one of the first people they see or meet once they come to the clinical side of the office is a very important role. I get to reassure them that everything is going to be alright.

Today we are highlighting Mr. Francisco Rojo, FNP! Mr. Rojo is a provider in our Greer office.

What does your Hispanic heritage mean to you?

Spanish heritage to me means family, good food, remembrance of the old times, taking care of each other and coming back to the roots.

What are your favorite Hispanic cultural traditions?

Before Christmas, we have the pesebre, the manger, that we build at home and then we celebrate novenas, where we celebrate a little something every day in the nine days leading up to the birth of baby Jesus on December 24th. Every day we sing songs and read a passage from the Bible.

What do you enjoy most about your role at NHFHS?

My favorite thing about being a provider here is interacting with people of all ages, sharing their stories and learning about them not just from the health perspective, but learning about who they are and what they do and their struggles.  I really go far and beyond helping with health issues, at times we usually just talk and share things, that’s the beautiful part of this thing called “health care provider.”

NHFHS Launches Staff COVID-19 Vaccination Incentive Program

New Horizon Family Health Services (NHFHS) has launched a staff COVID-19 vaccination incentive program to encourage employees to get vaccinated.

As part of the program, fully-vaccinated NHFHS employees receive a $100 gift card. Additionally, a monthly drawing to win a $500 gift card is held for fully-vaccinated staff. Since the program started in July, the COVID-19 immunization rate among NHFHS staff has increased to 68%.

NHFHS’ Lead Pharmacist, Joe Umina, won a $500 gift card as part of the organization’s COVID-19 Vaccination Incentive Program.

NHFHS’ Lead Pharmacist, Joe Umina, is the recipient of the first $500 gift card drawing.  When asked why he chose to get the COVID-19 vaccine, Joe said, “I received the vaccine because I care. I care about my health along with my family, my coworkers and my community’s health and wellbeing. I believe this incentive reflects New Horizon Family Health Services’ commitment to provide a safe environment for all employees and patients through encouraging all employees to be vaccinated.”

NHFHS’ President and Chief Executive Officer, Regina M. Mitchell, agrees. “Our organization is committed to the health of our staff, patients and community. The COVID-19 vaccine is one of the best tools we have to fight the virus and keep our communities healthy. In addition to the vaccine incentive program, NHFHS continues to work to educate staff and patients on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. I urge everyone to get vaccinated and be part of the solution.”

All NHFHS medical offices offer the Moderna vaccine to eligible individuals. Individuals can make an appointment by calling 864-729-8330, extension 1766. Or just walk in to the 975 W. Faris Road office in Greenville Monday-Friday 8 am-3:30 pm, no appointment needed.

NHFHS Partners to Launch Life-Saving Program

NHFHS, American Heart Association and Meals on Wheels Start Blood Pressure Monitoring Program

NHFHS is pleased to partner with the American Heart Association (AHA) and Meals on Wheels to launch a blood pressure monitoring program for community members living with hypertension. “High blood pressure is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death,” said Kelly Wilkins, Executive Director with the American Heart Association. “Through this collaboration, we are able to serve those in need and connect them with services to improve their overall health.”

AHA provided health resources, including blood pressure cuffs, to New Horizon Family Health Services patients who have been diagnosed with hypertension. NHFHS’ Nurse Patient Care Coordinator/Educators will work with these individuals to help them monitor and manage their blood pressure from home. Individuals will also be provided healthy meals through the Meals on Wheels delivery service. “Meals on Wheels is honored to be a part of this collaborative effort to provide nutritious meals in conjunction with support for healthier lifestyles that can impact cardiac health” said Catriona Carlisle, Executive Director with Meals on Wheels. Good nutrition is an important part of managing blood pressure. Together, these organizations are helping individuals reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiac death.

“This collaboration furthers our organization’s mission of improving the health of the communities we serve by providing NHFHS’ Nurse Patient Care Coordinator/Educators an additional tool when working with patients diagnosed with high blood pressure to help manage this chronic condition,” said Regina M. Mitchell, New Horizon Family Health Services President and Chief Executive Officer.

High blood pressure affects more than 100 million adults in the U.S. and over 50% of people living with high blood pressure don’t know they have it. “Knowing your numbers is the first step to controlling your blood pressure,” said Wilkins. “We are grateful for the  collaboration with New Horizon Family Health Services and Meals on Wheels because  together, we can accomplish so much more.”

It’s COVID-19 Vaccine Action Week!

It’s COVID-19 Vaccine Action Week! Do you still need the vaccine?

Before I made the decision to get a COVID-19 vaccine, I took time to review the facts and the science. I was convinced that the vaccines are very effective and safe. Serious side effects are rare and treatable, and minor side effects, like a sore arm, usually go away within a few days. That gave me the confidence I needed to get the vaccine as soon as it was offered to me.

If you’re still trying to decide if you’ll get a COVID vaccine, I strongly recommend that you get vaccinated. Your health, and the health of our community, is incredibly important to me, and the COVID-19 vaccine will help protect you and your loved ones from getting sick. And it will help us all get back to doing the things we love.

All New Horizon Family Health Services medical offices are offering the Moderna vaccine to all eligible individuals in our community. You can get the vaccine in two ways:
